Google Alert just sent me a mention of my name associated with an article called “Types of Rape.” As I don’t believe I’ve discussed that in the past, I had to check out the URL.
It’s a re-post of an ABC article from 2000 about online harassment. The name of the article as it appeared was “Stalking in Cyberspace.”
I’m vexed, as I do NOT equate cyberstalking with rape. I am, in fact, highly offended at the very idea of “online rape.” It’s absolutely stupid.
I’ve just sent the following to speakout@global.co.za:
Hi there. I’ve just learned that an ABC article in which I am quoted, “Stalking in Cyberspace,” is on your site with the title “Types of Rape.”
I am quite offended, as I do not equate our family’s experience with rape. I do not believe that it is possible for rape to happen online.
I do not have a problem with your use of the article (though ABC might), but I must ask that you change the title to make it clear that online harassment is NOT rape.
Sincerely,
Cynthia Armistead
