Rift in the Soul by Faith Hunter
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Well, that was intense! I had trouble stopping reading this book. I was distracted by wanting to read at inappropriate times because I wanted to know what happened next. That doesn’t happen to me very often.
Rift in the Soul is not a book to pick up as an introduction to the Soulwood series or to this world (Jane Yellorock’s universe) in general. It’s a wonderful book for those who are up-to-date on the Soulwood and Yellowrock series, though.
At the beginning of the book, Nell Nicholson Ingram arrives at Ming of Glass’ clan home in Knoxville. She’s accompanied by Rick LaFleur, her PsyLED boss, and Ayatas FireWind, her grandboss. They are responding to an “invitation” issued to Nell, aka a demand for Nell’s presence. LaFleur and FireWind are present as her backup, since it’s always a bit dicey to visit with (negotiate with) the Master of the City. And we’re off, as events immediately begin to happen in quick succession. There are no pauses in the action from there on out.
Most of the events in this volume follow from previous books. All the plot threads that I recall are wrapped up, leading me to believe that this may be a series-ending book, like Final Heir in the Jane Yellowrock series.
I do hope there’s a new series from Faith Hunter soon! I enjoy the Junkyard Cats novellas, but they are tempting morsels rather than literary meals.
