Kitchen Counters

The counters in our new apartment get stained if anything sits on them for an hour or so! Saturday night we had fresh strawberries for dessert, and I didn’t clean up the bowl immediately because we had guests over for gaming. I had to use bleach to get the red/pink stain up, and that’s standard for ANYTHING that sits.

I have no idea what the countertops are made of. I don’t think they’re Formica, because that would be slick and not porous. They are porous, and it’s some kind of manmade something, but I don’t know what it is. Of course, the leasing people aren’t really any help—in fact, they seemed quite surprised at the question about what they’re made of.

I don’t want to keep bleaching the counters, so I’d like to find a way to seal them. Any ideas?
