Georgia Senate threatens dismantling of USA
They really did, by a vote of 43 – 1. On April 1, but it wasn’t an April Fool’s joke.

The resolution goes on to endorse the theory that states have the right to abridge constitutional freedoms of religion, press and speech. According to the resolution, it is up to the states to decide “how far the licentiousness of speech and of the press may be abridged.”
(snip)
Finally, the resolution states that if Congress, the president or federal courts take any action that exceeds their constitutional powers, the Constitution is rendered null and void and the United States of America is officially disbanded. As an example, the resolution specifically states that if the federal government enacts “prohibitions of type or quantity of arms or ammunition,” the country is disbanded.

You better believe that I’m writing to our state senator right away. Yes, this nonsense was slipped in on day 39 of the 40 day legislative session, but that is absolutely no excuse. Our representatives have no business voting for anything they haven’t thoroughly read, understood, and debated. That’s their job!

Yet another reason I don’t want to live in Georgia any more. I seriously think this is a backlash against our election of a black Democrat to the presidency. I’m looking at blue states now.

Weight Discrimination As Prevalent as Racial Discrimination

31 March 2008, 9:47 pm. 4 Comments. Filed under Civil Rights, Size Acceptance.

I was going to ask, “This is news to whom?” Then I realized that it’s perfectly likely that people who aren’t fat really don’t realize how much size discrimination there is, while it’s impossible for the rest of us to avoid it.

From the International Journal of Obesity, 4 March 2008:
1

Discrimination against overweight people-particularly women-is as common as racial discrimination, according to a study by the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity at Yale University.
“These results show the need to treat weight discrimination as a legitimate form of prejudice, comparable to other characteristics like race or gender that already receive legal protection,” said Rebecca Puhl, research scientist and lead author.
(…)
The study also revealed that women are twice as likely as men to report weight discrimination and that weight discrimination in the workplace and interpersonal mistreatment due to obesity is common.
(…)
Co-author Tatiana Andreyava of Yale said weight discrimination is more prevalent than discrimination based on sexual orientation, nationality/ethnicity, physical disability, and religious beliefs. “However, despite its high prevalence, it continues to remain socially acceptable,” she said.

I’ll probably be slammed for this, but I honestly thing that weight/size discrimination may be even more prevalent in the U.S. than racial discrimination, because it’s socially acceptable.

Baptist Church Votes Not to Accept Black Members

28 August 2006, 2:32 pm. 1 Comment. Filed under Civil Rights.

By way of Rebecca Blood’s blog, more bad news on the civil rights front.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports that Fellowship Baptist Church in Saltillo voted on August 6 not to accept black members. In doing so, they rescinded a previous invitation to join the congregation that had been extended to the family of a biracial child who had “accepted Jesus” at the church during a revival.

Pastor John Stevens resigned after the vote.

The church was “afraid Joe might come with his people and have blacks in the church,” Stevens said. “I could not go along with that. There would always be a wall between us, so I resigned that night.”

At least they seem to be embarrassed about it, as the congregation began denying that the vote ever happened after an August 17 meeting in response to press inquiries.

BTW — when most of us think of Baptists, we’re thinking of the Southern Baptist Convention, which is the biggest group. This church is part of the smaller Baptist Missionary Alliance. The article doesn’t mention any response from the denomination.

Bus driver orders black children to give up seats to white children

25 August 2006, 3:27 pm. Comments Off. Filed under Civil Rights, News.

I feel like I’m stuck in a time warp. How could this happen in 2006?

From the Shreveport Times, dated August 24, 2006:

COUSHATTA — Nine black children attending Red River Elementary School were directed last week to the back of the school bus by a white driver who designated the front seats for white children.
